Combatting Well Contamination

Dug wells have been a source of water for thousands of years. It conjures images of a raised stone circle and a wooden bucket being lowered to the depths below. As you can imagine, wells like this were not sealed properly and became sources of contamination and illness for the communities using them. Fortunately, the world has come a long way, and methods to properly close up the well and filter contaminants were developed to make drinking well water much less risky. If your property has a well, there are a few things you can do to further mitigate the risks as well.

Leave It to the Professionals

The first thing you want to do is engage a water well service Brazoria County to inspect your well and property. They will assess the area for potentially hazardous materials that could cause contamination or possible defects in your well components that need to be repaired.

Re-Evaluate Your Use of Chemicals

Create a “chemical-free” zone around your well of approximately 100 ft or more. Do not store or use any chemicals within that zone, and you want to keep animals and their waste as far away as possible too. Where possible, use biodegradable products, alternative forms of pest control, and dispose of unsafe household waste at proper collection sites.

Test Your Water Regularly

At a minimum, you should have your water analyzed annually, and more if there are signs of possible contamination (like chronic digestive illness). Test both at your tap and directly from the well to ensure your treatment systems are functioning optimally. Regular testing tracks changes in your source water in addition to pinpointing present issues.

Many people take the privilege of having clean drinking water for granted. Don’t assume your water is clean, make sure it is by taking the proper, proactive precautions to ensure it is.
